The Don CeSar and Its History

The Don CeSar is more than a resort backdrop. Built in 1928 by Thomas Rowe, the “Pink Palace” served as a military hospital and then a Veterans Administration office during and after World War II before being restored to its hotel use in the 1970s. Scott Fitzgerald reportedly visited during its early days, and the hotel’s grand ballroom and Mediterranean architecture give the beach a landmark that most Florida communities would envy. Even visitors not staying at the resort tend to wander over to take photographs from the sand, and a drink on the terrace at sunset is one of the better cheap thrills the area offers.

Pass-a-Grille at the Southern End

Pass-a-Grille, the neighborhood at the very southern tip of the barrier island, is where St. Pete Beach reveals its older, quieter self. The streets here are narrow and lined with mid-century bungalows, the restaurants tend toward the casual and the local, and the beach at sunset is some of the finest Gulf-watching anywhere on the coast. The Hurricane restaurant has been serving grouper sandwiches and cold beer since 1977 and consistently draws crowds for its rooftop deck views. The ferry to Fort De Soto Park departs from the Pass-a-Grille area, and the crossing alone is worth the trip.

St. Pete Beach vs. Clearwater

The two destinations often get compared, and the choice usually comes down to energy level. Clearwater Beach runs busier, louder, and more commercially dense, with Pier 60 and the aquarium drawing significant day-tripper traffic. St. Pete Beach moves at a slightly easier pace and has a larger permanent residential community, which gives it a different feel even at peak capacity. The beaches themselves are equally beautiful, with the same Gulf-washed quartz sand and shallow warm water. Fort De Soto Park, accessible from the south end of the island, arguably has the finest beach of all and sees a fraction of the traffic that either main beach receives.
